Average salary in Malaysia (2026): median RM2,793, not the RM3,652 mean

Ask "what's the average salary in Malaysia" and you'll get two very different numbers. The median is RM2,793 a month; the mean is RM3,652. Most articles quote the higher one — and it paints a rosier picture than most people actually earn.

Both come from the same official source: DOSM's Salaries & Wages Survey 2024. The gap between them is the whole story.

Median vs mean: why the RM860 gap matters

• The median (RM2,793) is the middle earner: half of Malaysians earn less, half earn more. It's the number that describes a typical worker.
• The mean (RM3,652) is the total wage bill divided by everyone. A small number of very high earners drag it upward, so it sits well above what most people take home.

When a headline says "the average Malaysian earns RM3,652", it's using the mean — technically true, but the typical worker earns closer to RM2,793. We lead with the median for that reason.

Salary by job group (2024)

DOSM publishes salaries for nine occupation groups. Here's the median and mean for each:

Notice the mean sits above the median in every group — the same high-earner skew, repeated at every level.

How much to trust these numbers

DOSM also publishes the uncertainty. The national mean (RM3,652) has a 95% confidence interval of roughly RM3,618–3,686 — tight, because the sample is large. Smaller groups have wider intervals. We mention this because a salary figure with no stated uncertainty is a figure asking to be trusted blindly.

What we don't publish

• Salary by job AND state does not exist officially. DOSM publishes salary by occupation (national) and salary by state (all jobs) — but never the two crossed. So we won't tell you "a Professional in Penang earns RMX": multiplying a national job figure by a state figure invents a number DOSM never measured. Other sites do this; it's fabrication, not data.
• These figures are citizens in the formal sector, 2024. The informal economy and non-citizens sit outside them.
• Job-title pay (e.g. a specific role) isn't in the official data — only the nine broad groups above. Public-sector roles are the exception, because JPA publishes their pay scales exactly: see our role-by-role guides for teacher, nurse, doctor, engineer and administrative assistant.
