Teacher salary in Malaysia (2026): DG5 gross is over RM2,700, not RM1,893

If you look at base pay alone, a DG5 teacher starts at RM1,893 a month. But that is not the figure that lands in your account.

With fixed allowances, the real gross for a DG5 teacher in the Klang Valley is about RM2,703 a month. Most other articles stop at RM1,893, or jump straight to the top grade. The question you're actually asking is: what do I take home right now?

At the end of a career, the top grade (DG14) can reach RM15,360 a month — and we show the full range for every grade below. Every figure here is pulled straight from official JPA circulars, not an estimate.

Warning: a lot of other articles still use the old numbers

This is the first thing you need to know.

On 1 December 2024, the government switched the pay system from SSM to SSPA (the Public Service Remuneration System). Two things changed:

1. The grade numbers got smaller. Grade DG41 is now called DG9. DG29 is now DG5.
2. The old salary figures are no longer valid.

So if you find an article that says "Grade DG41, minimum salary RM2,422" — that's the SSM figure, abolished more than a year ago.

One more common mix-up: some people think the grade is now a bare number like "9" or "41". That's wrong. The letters stay — it's still DG9, not "9".

The grade minimum ≠ your starting salary

This is what most people misread.

Look at the table above: grade DG5 has a minimum of RM1,650. But a new teacher at DG5 actually starts at RM1,893 (teaching diploma) or RM1,974, depending on qualification.

Why the difference? Because the grade minimum is the floor of the salary range for that grade, while the starting salary is the entry point set in the service scheme. You don't begin at the lowest point of the grade.

Same at DG9: the grade minimum is RM2,250, but the starting salary is higher and varies by qualification:

• Degree + teaching diploma: RM2,360
• Sijil Menengah Pendidikan (with credit): RM2,580
• Master's: RM3,130
• Doctorate (PhD): RM3,460

What a DG5 teacher's gross salary really is

Base pay isn't the amount that lands. With fixed allowances, a DG5 teacher in the Klang Valley takes home more than base:

Notice: no BIPK on this list. BIPK is the critical-service payment, and teaching is not a critical scheme — so teachers don't get it, even though nurses and doctors do. A lot of other articles get this wrong. (Teachers holding posts such as Senior Teacher or Co-curriculum Teacher get an extra duty allowance of RM60–120 — but that's for post-holders only, not every teacher.)

Pay increases: how they happen

Every grade has an Annual Salary Increment (KGT) — a fixed amount added each year while you sit inside that grade's range.

Take DG9: the KGT is RM225 a year. Starting at RM2,360, after ten years without a grade change your pay is about RM4,610 — still well below the grade maximum (RM11,110).

To move faster, you need to change grade, not just wait for the KGT.

Against the national average

For context, DOSM reports the median monthly salary for the Professionals group (teachers sit here) at RM5,821 in 2024, with a mean of RM6,524.

Teachers at DG10 and above fall in that range. A new teacher at DG5 is well below it — which is expected, because the median spans professionals at every level of experience.

What we don't know

There are a few things we're not certain of ourselves — so we'll say so plainly:

• The gross calculation above is for the Klang Valley (Zone A). Teachers elsewhere get a lower BISH rate, so the gross is slightly different. Teachers in Sabah/Sarawak may qualify for an extra regional allowance we haven't included here.
• We don't state how long it takes to move from one grade to the next. That depends on performance, vacancies and current policy — and there's no official timetable we can point to.
• The Phase 2 rise (7%) took effect on 1 January 2026 — calculated on each person's base pay, not on allowances. JPA hasn't published a new salary schedule; the table above is the range structure still in use. Teachers in service before 1 January 2026 get +7% on base pay.
