Salaries in Malaysia (2026): what people actually earn, by the numbers

"What's a normal salary in Malaysia?" has one honest headline answer: the median wage is RM2,793 a month (DOSM, 2024) — half of workers earn less, half earn more. But that single number hides an enormous spread. Pay depends far more on your job, sector, and location than on any national "average". This is the map; each number below links to the full, sourced breakdown.

The typical salary: RM2,793, not RM3,652

There are two "averages", and they tell different stories:

• The median is RM2,793/month — the middle earner, and the honest description of a typical worker.
• The mean is RM3,652/month — the total wage bill split across everyone, dragged up by top earners.

The spread by job group

DOSM publishes salaries for nine broad occupation groups. The gap between top and bottom is more than 3.5×:

These are the only official cuts — DOSM does not publish pay by job title, so any single "software engineer" or "nurse" figure comes from private surveys or job ads, not the government.

The floor: RM1,700 a month

Since 1 August 2025, the national minimum wage is RM1,700/month (Minimum Wages Order 2024). That's the gross floor — after EPF, SOCSO and EIS, a minimum-wage worker takes home about RM1,501. Full deduction maths in minimum wage in Malaysia.

What actually moves your pay

The national average is the least useful number for your own situation. Four things move it far more:

• Qualification. The median for an employed graduate is RM4,521/month — well above the RM2,793 all-worker median. Detail in graduate salary.
• Seniority. Within any job, junior-to-senior is often a 2–3× gap. A blended average hides it.
• Location. The Klang Valley pays a clear premium; the same role in Penang, Johor or Sarawak typically sits lower.

Gross vs take-home

Every gross figure on this page is before deductions. For most employees, EPF (11%), SOCSO and EIS come off automatically, and PCB (monthly tax) applies above the tax-free threshold. So a RM3,000 gross salary lands closer to RM2,650 in the bank. Whenever a number matters to a decision, check whether it's gross or net — we label it every time.

What we don't publish

• Salary by job and state. DOSM publishes pay by occupation (national) and by state (all jobs), but never the two crossed. "A manager in Penang earns RMX" is a number nobody measured.
• Job-title precision from official data. The nine groups above are the ceiling; anything finer is a private-source estimate, and we say so when we use one.
• The informal economy. These figures are formal-sector citizens; gig, informal and non-citizen work sits outside them.
