No tax at this salary (PCB RM0). After the RM9,000 personal relief and the RM400 individual rebate, your chargeable income (RM23,040 a year) is still below the tax threshold.
EPF is the biggest deduction — but it is not money lost. It goes into your own retirement savings account.
How it’s calculated
Four mandatory deductions come off your gross salary:
- EPF (11%) — your own retirement savings, not money lost.
- SOCSO/PERKESO and EIS— charged on PERKESO’s banded wage schedule (the midpoint of each RM100 band), 0.5% and 0.2%, capped at the RM6,000 wage ceiling.
- PCB (monthly tax) — usually RM0 for low and middle incomes, after the RM9,000 personal relief, EPF relief, and the RM400 individual rebate (chargeable income below RM35,000).
This is for a citizen under 60, mandatory deductions only. It excludes zakat, PTPTN repayments, optional deductions, extra tax reliefs and variable allowances. For the full explanation with worked examples, read gross vs net salary.
Accuracy note: EPF is calculated at a flat 11% — the KWSP Third Schedule may round by a ringgit or two for salaries that aren’t round multiples. PCB is an annual-tax estimate divided by 12; LHDN’s official monthly MTD method can differ slightly month to month, but reconciles at e-Filing. Treat these figures as indicative, accurate to within a few ringgit a month.
