Government jobs in Malaysia: how to apply the right way (2026)

Applications for jobs in the federal civil service are made through the Public Service Commission (SPA), and it is free.

That's the most important sentence in this article. Anyone who asks for payment to "process" or "guarantee" a government job is a scammer.

The application steps

The first thing many people don't know: you don't apply for a federal post by sending a resume. Everything goes through the SPA9 system (spa9.spa.gov.my) — a structured online profile, not a free-form resume. (That's why a resume example is useful for the private sector; for government, the skill is filling in the SPA9 profile correctly.)

1. Register an SPA9 account. You need your IC number and an active email address.
2. Complete your SPA9 profile. You fill in structured fields: personal details, academic qualifications (with grades and exam years), work experience, and the Applicant's Declaration — a statement that your information is true. If the profile is incomplete, your application may not be processed at all, because the system filters candidates by the qualifications you enter.
3. Apply for open posts. Pick the scheme and grade you qualify for. Check each scheme's entry requirements first — minimum academic qualification, age limits, and language requirements.
4. Wait for the call. If you qualify, you're called for an online exam (for some schemes) or straight to an interview.

SPA9 registration is valid for one year. After that, you need to update your profile again. The same profile is used for all applications during that year — so complete it properly once, rather than rushing it each time a new advert appears.

Check the grade before you apply

Every post is advertised with a grade code, for example DG9 (graduate teacher) or N1 (administrative assistant). The grade sets your salary range.

Since 1 December 2024, the grade numbers changed under the SSPA system. The old grade DG41 is now DG9, and N19 is now N1. If you're reading an old advert or guide, those numbers may no longer match.

Watch out for scams

A few things that never happen in genuine civil-service recruitment:

• A payment to apply, register, or "guarantee" a place
• A job offer over WhatsApp from a private number with no application process
• A request for a copy of your IC or bank details before any official interview

• Current vacancies change through the year. We don't list individual posts here — the SPA portal is the official source and is always more up to date than any third-party list.
• Jobs at the state level and in statutory bodies have their own commissions and don't go through SPA.
